At Rufforth Primary School, we aim to inspire and engage children’s interest in sporting activities through providing a wide range of opportunities within school, after school and within the wider community.

Our curriculum intends for children to enjoy physical activity and are therefore able to adopt a healthy lifestyle – one where they can discover their talents and have a life-long love of sport.

The use of external sports coaches and partnerships (Total Sports and York Schools Sports Partnership) alongside the development of our school staff, ensures PE is delivered to a clear and structured timetable, in line with the National Curriculum, resulting in an effective curriculum implementation.

Gold Sports Mark

We are delighted we have achieved the Sainsbury’s School Games GOLD SPORTS MARK in recognition of our commitment to providing excellent sporting opportunities for our pupils.  Tournaments, sports days, intra-school sports, extra-curricular sport and sports leader programmes all contributed to this.

The School Games Mark provides a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport and hopefully inspire these children to carry on these activities throughout their lives.

We provide all children with opportunities to compete in sport and take part in other activities that build character and help to embed values such as fairness respect, support and trust.

Through a positive caring environment, we provide the opportunity for every child to reach their full potential.  Through suitable differentiation and logically developed tasks, it is intended that our children, irrespective of their innate ability, will enjoy success and be motivated to further develop their individual potential.

Our progressive learning objectives, combined with sympathetic and varied teaching approaches, endeavour to provide stimulating, enjoyable, satisfying and appropriately challenging learning experiences for every child.

Our curriculum ensures skills are developed through the following topics: dance, invasion games, gymnastics, outdoor and adventurous activity, swimming, athletics, net and wall games and striking and fielding games. In addition to this it is essential that children develop an understanding of a healthy lifestyle and make connections between physical health and a healthy mind.
