“To Learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world.”
At Rufforth, we intend language learning to spark a curiosity about the wider world and to add an international and multi-cultural dimension to children’s learning.
We teach French on a bi-weekly basis to children in KS2 and children in KS1 have the opportunity to attend an enrichment club to begin their language learning journey.
We foster a problem-solving approach, giving children opportunities to work out language use for themselves in a supportive context where risk-taking and creativity are encouraged, and there is an emphasis on having fun with the new language.
In learning about another language, it is necessary to be aware of “difference” in a positive way. To know that there are other ways to live and behave which are valid, despite not being the same as the one that the child knows at home.
The four key language learning skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) will be taught and all necessary grammar will be covered in an age-appropriate way across key stage 2.
Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.
