“Design is thinking made visual.”
Saul Bass, designer and film maker
Design and Technology is about providing opportunities for children to use creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems, considering their own and others’ needs.
Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Design Technology encourages children to become creative problem solvers, both as individuals and as members of a team. It requires children to be active learners with the confidence to ‘have a go,’ and the resilience to persist with a project when challenges occur.
We aim to, wherever possible, build relationships with local businesses and members of the school community. Our DT curriculum prepares children for a developing world and provides them with a greater awareness and understanding of how everyday products are designed and made.
Collaborative work with peers in DT develops mutual respect for the differing opinions, beliefs and abilities of others. In addition, children develop a respect for the environment, for their own health and safety and that of others. They learn to appreciate the value of similarities and differences and learn to show tolerance.
At Rufforth, we follow the ‘Design, Make, Evaluate’ approach to the teaching of DT, as outlined in the National Curriculum Programme of Study. Children develop skills alongside the design process related to food technology, woodwork, sewing, moving mechanisms and more.
Our curriculum combines skills, knowledge, concepts and values to enable children to tackle real problems. It can improve critical analysis, problem solving, and practical capability and evaluation skills.
We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other subject areas such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art thereby enabling children to make connections and notice patterns in their learning.
Through Design and Technology children are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers. Making mistakes and troubleshooting is a huge part of Design and Technology and integral to learning.
