“Every child is an artist.”

Pablo Picasso

We believe that art is a vital and integral part of children’s education. It provides them with opportunities to develop a range of ways in which they can share and express their individual creativity, whilst learning about and making links with a wide spectrum of different types of art in our society.

Moreover, it enables pupils to develop a natural sense of wonder and curiosity and to become inspired by the world around them and therefore links strongly to our school values.

At Rufforth, children learn about great artists both in the past and present, and make links with art and cultural change. They explore the work of local artists, learn a range of skills and have access to a wide variety of media to enable the children to create artwork they are proud of.

Children’s work is shared and celebrated in many ways: open classrooms for our ‘Rufforth Family’, displays and ‘exhibits’ around school, contributing to community art events e.g. Easter Egg village walks, Christmas village advent calendars, as well sharing work as on social media.

Art contributes to children’s personal development through creativity, independence, judgement and self-reflection.

Art & Design at Rufforth equips children with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress throughout the school, they develop the skills to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.
